Caramelized Onions

Ingredients

  • 1 whole yellow onion

  • 2 tablespoons water

  • 1 tablespoon oil

  • 2 tablespoons butter.

  • 1 teaspoon brown sugar

  • 2 tablespoons balsamic vinegar


Preparation

  1. Chop the onion into long thin strips. Place in a medium pan with the 2 tablespoons of water. Cover with a lid and cook over medium heat for 10 minutes (stirring every 3 minutes). At this point the onions should be softened and translucent.

  2. Take off the lid, reduce the heat to medium low, and add in the tablespoon of oil. Stir and cook uncovered for 15 minutes (stirring every 3 minutes). At this point the onions should be starting to brown.

  3. Add in the brown sugar and 2 tablespoons of butter and cook for an additional 30 minutes (stirring every 3 minutes). At this point the onions should be golden brown and sweet.

  4. Add in the 2 tablespoons balsamic vinegar and cook for an additional 5 minutes until fragrant and a deep brown.


Notes

  • Yield: 1 caramelized onion
